Our Reason
The Hollings family, myself Andrea, my husband and two children then aged 7 and 5 moved to Arboleas over 14 years ago. Disheartened with what the UK had to offer us as a family and particularly our two children we decided to take the giant step of a full relocation to Spain.
Having visited the more well known Costas, Costa Blanca, Costa del Sol, we knew that whilst these were lovely locations they were not what we were looking for in terms of a new lifestyle. We wanted our children to grow up in a more traditional Spanish environment and embrace a different culture and way of life.
Traditional Spanish charm
We came to Almeria for a long weekend at the end of February 2005 leaving minus temperatures and snow on the ground at Leeds Bradford airport and arrived in Almeria to temperatures of 18 degrees, blue sky and sunshine. We knew instantly that this was the area for us and our family and fell in love with the traditional Spanish charm of the mountains and the villages, the miles and miles of orange and lemon, olive and almond groves. Retaining many of the old traditions and customs we felt that this was an area our children could flourish. They attended the village Spanish school and were very quickly fluent in the language and immersed into the lifestyle. They are now aged 19 and 21 and very much integrated into the Spanish community and working in Spanish businesses.
A laid back lifestyle
Many said we were crazy leaving behind good jobs, a nice house etc in the UK to move lock stock and barrel to another country but we knew it was the right thing for us and we have never looked back. The lifestyle here is relaxed, the climate fabulous and the cost of living very reasonable. We live in the hills 7 minutes drive from the village of Arboleas in a two storey villa with a swimming pool, an outside bar and entertaining area and very much live an outdoor lifestyle plus we wake up to a fabulous view every morning.
